Said the Whale Share New Track "First Time Since the First Time"
Watch the video for 'Cascadia' closer "Gambier Island Green"
Published Sep 23, 2019In the midst of an extensive Canadian tour, Said the Whale have announced the release of Cascadia Deluxe, which will include five additional tracks not originally featured on Cascadia. While the record is due Friday (September 27) via Arts & Crafts, we now have some of the new material from the upcoming expanded edition: "First Time Since the First Time."
The story of the song's inception is described in the following statement:
This song ended up on the cutting room floor a few years ago and unfortunately we never found a home for it in the context of any of our recent albums, but we've always loved this song and wanted to find a way to release it. I wrote it a couple years ago, the day after I stupidly broke up with my now-extremely-pregnant fiancé. This song is not as sad to me anymore because I know how the story unfolds, but I love how it captures the mood of a really tender time in my life when everything felt like it was crumbling to pieces — at my own hand.
Alongside their new track, the band have also shared a music video for Cascadia's album-closing track "Gambier Island Green." The video was directed by SJ Findlay and shows the group's Ben Worcester and his dog Trout on a lush hike on Gambier Island in British Columbia. Scroll past the audio player to watch it below.
On the "Gambier Island Green," Worcester had this to say:
I sing this song like a mantra, it's meditation. When I'm homesick it can transport me. When I'm in my place it can envelope me. I wrote it nearly decade ago as a gift for my family and I sing it for them when we're together, to freeze time, capture the spirit of a place we share. We know the trees and animals, like neighbours, I view them more as characters in my story than objects and try to honour them. My deep love and and overwhelming nostalgia, overflowing, overflowing.
Cascadia Deluxe follows the album's original pressing from early 2019. Said the Whale had also previously released Cascadia's accompanying 80-page cookbook this past summer.
