Hear the Microphones' First New Album in Nearly Two Decades
Phil Elverum is sharing his 'Microphones in 2020' via a short film
Published Aug 06, 2020Phil Elverum is about to leave Mount Eerie and go back to the Microphones for his first new album under his old moniker in 17 years. Microphones in 2020 arrives officially on Friday (August 7), but Phil is giving us the album a bit early via a newly shared short film.
The album-length film will premiere today at 1 p.m. ET. It promises to offer "a lyric video slideshow of sorts" to "musically and visually presents for the first time his new album, Microphones in 2020. As previously reported, the album is made entirely of one 44-minute song.
In a statement, Elverum explains the following the short film:
It's not a music video really. A short film? A not-moving picture? An unboxing of a not yet made photobook? Amateur hypnotism? I like the idea of "lyric videos," because music videos always seem weird to me, and I like making people read the words. This is kind of a lyric video, but also a slideshow, a powerpoint presentation, a flip book. For this long autobiographical song, since there was no archival footage to use, I spent 3 weeks carefully arranging over 800 of my printed photos to sync them with the lyrics, line by line. It is a documentary, illustrated with blurs, clouds, ghosts, and the real actual people and places that are being sung about.
Down below, you can soak in the film — and the album.
Microphones in 2020 will arrive via Elverum's own P.W. Elverum & Sun imprint, and it can be pre-ordered now.
