'The Shining' Is Getting a Spinoff TV Series via HBO and J.J. Abrams
'Overlook' will take us back to Stephen King's haunted universe
Published Apr 16, 2020If you've been itching for more of The Shining, you're about to get some. Today HBO Max revealed it is diving into Stephen King's haunted universe for a new series called Overlook.
The show will come from J.J. Abrams's Bard Robot and focus on the fictional Overlook Hotel from The Shining. So far, though, there are few details about Overlook, though it's described as a horror-thriller that will explore the untold stories of the infamous hotel.
Abrams will produce Overlook alongside Ben Stephenson and Rachel Rusch Rich. The show will also follow last year's Mike Flanagan-directed sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.
In addition to Overlook, Bad Robot will be diving into the Justice League universe for Justice League Dark, as well as 1970s American Southwest with Duster, which will focus on a getaway driver working for a growing crime syndicate.
"What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie [McGrath]," said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer of HBO Max and president of TNT, TBS and truTV, in a statement. "What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max."
So far, no premiere dates for any of the newly announced shows have been confirmed.
