Published Feb 13, 2019As multiple reissues have proven in recent years, late-great Italian film composer Piero Piccioni left behind a treasure trove brimming with musical wonder. Now adding to that will be an expanded vinyl reissue of the maestro's masterful soundtrack work for 3 Notti d'Amore.
The soundtrack will come via Italian reissue hub Four Flies, who will re-release Piccioni's 3 Notti d'Amore on February 22.
For the unfamiliar, 3 Notti d'Amore was an omnibus film released in 1964 with individual segments directed by Renato Castellani, Luigi Comencini and Franco Rossi. Along with it came a soundtrack release on the legendary CAM imprint for its CMS series.
And while the original release also featured contributions from Giovanni Fusco, Carlo Rustichelli and Piccioni, Four Flies will be focusing on the latter's contributions, as well as Rustichelli's two pieces penned for the film ("Nelle Tue Braccia," "Mistico Amore").
As Four Flies explains, Piccioni's 3 Notti D'Amore work "is considered one of the grooviest and jazziest scores composed by the legendary Italian maestro. Thanks to the support of an exceptional big band, Piccioni shapes a unique cool style, supported by a truly exotic and percussive rhythm section ('Come on Rome,' 'Just For Fun'), full of charming flute phrases ('The Easy Way') and baritone sax passages ('Pop's Lolly'), and beautifully played by the two great soloists, Gino Marinacci and Gato Barbieri. Piccioni himself plays the piano on all the tracks, and created a magnificent, dynamic and sophisticated soundtrack."
The Four Flies reissue will include a series of previously unreleased tracks, as well as a few now as extended full versions, such as Piccioni's "Sally's Surf" (which was featured on the seminal Easy Tempo series). The entire album has been remastered from the original master tapes by Fabrizio De Carolis at Reference Mastering Studio.
"One of Piccioni's lesser known masterpieces that truly embodies that golden time period, and a real beauty for every '60s jazz lover," Four Flies adds of the release.
Up above, you can see the soundtrack's new artwork by Luke Insect and the newly configured tracklist below, where you'll also find a sampler of the release.
