Published Mar 16, 2020Paul Schrader does not mince words, both in his films and in real life. The director was hard at work on The Card Counter, his follow-up to his career best film First Reformed, when an actor was tested positive for coronavirus. The director's response was not exactly cool-headed.
The Card Counter stars Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe and Tiffany Haddish, and was filming in Biloxi, MS. It had five days of principal photography left before being shut down over coronavirus concerns. Though details are scarce, Deadline reported that an actor on the production tested positive for the virus.
"Production halted five days before wrap by my pussified producers because an LA day player had the coronavirus," Schrader wrote on his personal Facebook. "Myself, I would have shot through hellfire rain to complete the film. I'm old and asthmatic, what better way to die than on the job?"
When it does eventually finish production, The Card Counter will star Isaac as William Tell, a gambler who tries to reform a young man seeking revenge on a former enemy.
